Oregon Red Wines

(More than Pinot Noir)

Sure, Pinot Noir put Oregon’s Willamette Valley on the map. And, yes, it is available at every winery in Tualatin Valley. But, did you know that so many of our winemakers are making exquisite reds that are not Pinot Noir? In fact, many winegrowers and winemakers are expanding their wine portfolios to include other red wines. Just like there are beer drinkers that want to have anything but an IPA, these are the four wineries to check out if you want to drink anything but a Pinot Noir.

Not only does Apolloni Vineyards produce an amazing line up of white wines, including Pinot Blanc and Viognier, they also produce a stellar selection of (mostly) Italian reds. From a fruit-forward Sangiovese to a spicy Merlot, Apolloni has one of the most diverse selections of red wines that are not Pinot Noir in the Tualatin Valley. (But, Pinot lovers, rest assured, they also have amazing Pinot Noir, as well.)

Blizzard Wines has made a name for itself with its bold red wines, such as the popular varietal Carménère, made from grapes grown in Eastern Washington (because the Willamette Valley is too cool to grow “big red” wines). Another rarity in the Tualatin Valley, Blizzard also produces a Dessert Syrah.
Reds to try: Malbec, Syrah and Dessert Syrah

Oak Knoll Winery started out nearly 50 years ago making berry wines. Today, the winery makes many different varietals of wines, including several red wines that are rarely found in the Willamette Valley wine region. One wine that makes Oak Knoll really stand out is its red blend “Deviant,” a sweet red wine.
Reds to try: Marechal Foch, Petit Verdot, “Toasted Cow” (red blend), “Deviant” (sweet red)

Rallison Cellars also offers an impressive selection of red wines. Here you will find many wines that are not commonly found in the region, such as Petite Sirah and Grenache, which is becoming more popular in the United States, as well as the big, bold taste of Zinfandel.
