Founded in 2017, Binary Brewing found its home in the historic former Beaverton Bakery building in 2021. “The town has so much amazing history,” Johnson says. “It’s really cool to be part of a community [where] you get to watch relationships grow.”
Johnson’s journey into brewing began humbly—with a single pint. “The look on the customer’s face when I handed them that pint was just magic and I knew that I was going to be involved in some way from then on,” he recalls.
From those early days pouring beer at a pizza place to brewing small five-gallon batches with friends in college, Johnson’s passion only deepened. That drive led him to a position at Portland’s Lompoc Brewing, where his craft took shape.
In 2017, Johnson took over Uptown Beer Co., a bottle shop in Tualatin Valley with a small brewery attached. There, alongside his business partner Roger, he launched Binary Brewing, built on a shared love of craft brewing and good beer. By 2022, the pair had opened Binary’s flagship brewery and taproom in downtown Beaverton, anchoring their vision in the city’s growing beer scene.
Today, Binary Brewing isn’t just reshaping Beaverton’s craft beer culture, it’s helping to foster collaboration across the Pacific Northwest. Johnson frequently teams up with other brewers to craft unique, one-off beers. “Brewery collaborations are really fun because we get to each bring our different skill sets in,” Johnson says. “The cool thing with collaboration is you are bringing different cultures, different minds and different ways of (beermaking). It’s really fun to learn how someone else does it.”
