When we talk about changing colors in the Tualatin Valley, we’re not just referencing fall foliage. October inspires swirls of paint, as well. Hillsboro Arts Month is in full-force, as are many other art events happening throughout the region. Spontaneity ignites creativity—so plan a weekend getaway to the Tualatin Valley. We promise our autumnal art weekend itinerary, detailed below, will get the creative juices flowing.
Friday, October 20: Dinner, a Show & a Murder Mystery
In the month of Halloween, get spooky! For dinner and a show, head to Bag&Baggage Production’s Vault Theatre—which is haunted by the amazing cast of Murder at Checkmate Manor. The play is a murder mystery from the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society. The show has some “drag,” but not in the traditional sense of the word.
Saturday, October 21: the Creative Process inside a Giant Pumpkin!
While carving a jack-o-lantern takes a certain artistic determination, carving a 1,000 pound pumpkin into a boat is a craft all its own at the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta. Stay at the Century Hotel and the morning fun will be right outside your window.
The apple cider donuts at the regatta will give you fuel for your next round of artistic journeying, touring dozens of artists at the Washington County Artists Open Studios Tour. One such artist is Forest Grove’s Helvi Smith who uses recycled house paints to create vibrant paintings.
Grab a bite at Tree’s Restaurant. Here, the chef artfully blends flavors of the Pacific Northwest with Cajun spices. Enjoy the tasty bites surrounded by not only trees, but also gorgeous artwork.
If you’re a fan of all thing noir, then you’re going to love the Broadway Rose Theatre Company’s production of Trails. The moving musical follows two friends hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Sunday, October 22: The Art of Winemaking
Hillsboro Arts Month coincides with the Willamette Valley’s crush season. Learn about the art of winemaking while sipping on the area’s best vinos at local wineries.
