Summer is great, but we’re itching for fall just a little bit—or at least enough to start planning our autumnal getaways. In addition to the colors changing, pumpkin patches and accompanied pumpkin spice lattes, the Tualatin Valley eagerly awaits cycling the Harvest Century Bike Ride on Sunday, September 22. Instead of mourning over the end of summer rides, the event revels in the splendors of the coming fall with options of a 25-mile, 45-mile, 75-mile or 100-mile bike ride along the scenic roads of the Tualatin Valley. Families with kids of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join the three-mile family route.
For a one-of-a-kind way to experience Oregon’s early fall delights, casual riders should join the easy-going 25-mile ride. Its first selling point is that this route is completely flat, yet still manages to pass through some of the Tualatin Valley’s most beautiful farms. Pedal at your own pace to take in views of Mt. Hood, the Oregon Coast Range and charming old farmhouses.
If you’re bold enough to commit to one of the longer rides, then you’ll be rewarded with a rest stop at Montinore Estate for a mid-ride tasting. If you fall in love with a bottle—or a case!—of wine, then don’t worry. You don’t need to carry the extra weight for the rest of the ride. Purchase it right there and the event organizers will arrange for the wine to be waiting for you at the finish line.

Cycling Getaway Activities
We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though. The Annual Harvest Century Bike Ride takes place on a Sunday, which means you’ll have all of Saturday for your leisure. If you decide to scope out the starting line a day ahead, then there’s a good chance you’ll get lured into the vibrant downtown Hillsboro Farmers Market. Sample as many fruits from local farms as possible—the antioxidants will help you on your ride.
After the market, treat yourself to a hearty breakfast or lunch at the Hillsboro Pharmacy & Fountain. The pharmacy may give you a Back to the Future moment as its soda fountain is a precious slice of Americana nostalgia. Old timers and little tykes have a shared delight over the out-of-this-world chocolate malt.
