Afternoon in Wine Country

As harvest winds down and we approach cellar season (the quiet time when wines are in the barrel or tank after the bustle of harvest, and before the bottling season), now is an ideal time to visit estate tasting rooms in Oregon’s Tualatin Valley. Located just minutes from Portland, Tualatin Valley is Portland’s wine country. In about 40 minutes from downtown, you can be sipping wine in this unsung wine region.

Wine Country

Start your excursion at Ruby Vineyard. The cozy tasting room will pour its current slate of wines, including their much acclaimed Pinot Noir.

Sit down for a bite at Tualatin Valley’s only wine country pizza joint, Midway Firehouse Pizza. Housed in a historic Hillsboro property, it is hard to resist the inventive culinary delight of the Hook & ladder pizza, which includes candied walnuts, sliced apples and feta.

With pizza sustenance, you and your crew will be ready for the next round of wine tasting at Raptor Ridge Winery. The tasting room is ready to prove that rosé is not just a summer sipper. With one swirl and sip of its extra special Brut Rosé, you’ll be convinced.

Just a short drive from Raptor Ridge Winery, stop for a caffeine pick-me-up at South Store Café. The café is a local favorite with its cozy farmhouse décor and house-made pastries. Sit down at one of the large antique dining tables and discuss your favorite wines.

Across the street from South Store Café, Smith Berry Barn is waiting. The beyond charming farm store is the place to pick up gifts for gourmand friends. We’re especially partial to the local wildflower honey, which can be stirred into tea all throughout the winter.

End your afternoon in Tualatin Valley wine country with a visit to Hawks View Winery. Hawks View is open until 7 p.m., long after the sun has set, but the cozy tasting room and modern fireplace beckons you to sit and stay for a while.

Many of Tualatin Valley’s estate tasting rooms are open year-round. We invite you to spend an afternoon in Tualatin Valley wine country and enjoy cellar season, a magical time of year.
