We are counting down the days until winter, and with the drizzly days of winter ahead, Oregonians are masters of the cozy life. Though really, it’s more than cozy. Because there’s no English equivalent, we’re borrowing the Danish term hygge. Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is a calm, yet festive atmosphere where you indulge in the little things that make you majorly happy. Find Oregon hygge vibes right here in Tualatin Valley.
Hygge Coffee Break
Your hands wrapped around a warm mug while taking in soul-satisfying conversation with people you love. That scene, my friends, is hygge. Find it with the best coffee in the northwest at some of Tualatin Valley’s coziest coffee spots. Symposium Coffee in Sherwood is located in an old house, and is an inviting setting to settle in for a sip-n-chat session. Add a little warmth to your coffee at Symposium, which also has a whiskey bar, which is perfect for a cool winter day. Insomnia Coffee’s newest located is located in Beaverton, but with several locations in Tualatin Valley, all of them provide the hygge experience.
Food is love. So, you’ll need some delicious snacking for your hygge times. The always packed (i.e. long line) Portland brunch favorite, broder, has a sister restaurant in the Tualatin Valley. Go to broder söder for Scandinavian comfort foods like open-faced sandwiches, Danish pancakes and lingonberry jam. This quaint cafe is located inside the Nordia House, which is part of the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation. Take a moment to wander the stunning Scandinavian-inspired architecture, which is soothing with its high ceilings, large windows and views of lush greenery—hygge indeed!
Hygge Reading Nook
Hygge can be a solo or group activity. For a hygge date with yourself, head to Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing. Yes, Oregon’s favorite bookstore has a location in Beaverton with endless nooks, crannies and corners to curl into with a good book. If Powell’s is a bit overwhelming, check out the independently owned Jan’s Paperbacks, a used book store located in the heart of downtown Beaverton.
Wine Hygge Vibes
You need not have to travel into the Tualatin Valley countryside to get your fill of hygge. Settle in at Syndicate Wine Bar, located in downtown Beaverton in “restaurant row.” Syndicate has a diverse selection of wines, as well as three of their own wines. In Old Town Sherwood, the comfy leather chairs at 503 Uncorked beckon to be sat in while you swirl local Pinot wines and nibble on a cheese plate.
The vibe is exceptionally hygge at McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove. This old Masonic property has been lovingly transformed into a hotel with sweet murals, comfy couches, stained glass and rich wood accents. A cozy fireplace awaits guests as they enter through the main lobby.
