Juneteenth, recognized every year on June 19, commemorates the end of over 400 years of enslavement of African American people in the United States. It recognizes that many people in Texas were still enslaved after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, as knowledge of the Proclamation was deliberately kept from them. Enslaved people continued to endure cruel, inhumane treatment, and exploitation.
Juneteenth provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of Black Americans through determination, perseverance and greater opportunity and to acknowledge that the struggle for equality continues.
