Record Store Day: April 20

Record Store Day, which was established in 2007, is an international celebration of independent record stores and the special role they play.

503 Records is a small new and used record store in Central Beaverton. Their small collection is heavy with hip hop and funk, with a dose of rock and pop selections, too. 503 is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and by appointment on Friday.

Located on the outskirts of Beaverton Exiled Records features new and used vinyl, cassette tapes and CDs of all genres, from country and folk, blues and jazz and classical to indie releases, R&B and soul and dance and electronic, and may genres in between. Exiled is open daily.

Independent Bookstore Day: April 27

This year marks the 11th annual Independent Bookstore Day, a national celebration of independent bookstores. Tualatin Valley has two independent bookstores, each selling new and used books.

Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing houses more than half a million used, new and hard-to-find books of every genre. The stacks feature both hard- and soft-cover books, as well as an impressive collection of graphic novels. Powell’s is open daily.

Jan’s, which specializes in fiction paperback books, has been around for more than 40 years. They sell new and used books for young adults and adults, as well as romance novels. Jan’s is open daily.

Free Comic Book Store Day: May 4

Held on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day offers North American sellers of comic books an opportunity to attract new readers to independent comic book stores.

Things from Another World (TFAW) is Beaverton’s signature comic book store, is–with four stores and an online shop–the third largest comic book retailer in the U.S. It stocks new graphic novels, manga and comics. TFAW is open daily.
