OREGON’S OLDEST FAMILY-OWNED COFFEE SHOP

Becky Jo Saxe has poured her passion into crafting exceptional coffee at her namesake coffee shop.

Oregon native Becky Jo Saxe’s passion for coffee was ignited when she lived on a coffee bean farm in Kona, Hawaii, after graduating from college. That experience shaped her journey, leading her to co-found BJ’s Coffee Co. in 1992 with her former husband, Ken. Today, BJ’s Coffee Co. (Map It) holds the distinction of being the oldest family-owned coffee shop in the state—a testament to its dedication to quality, community and the love of a perfectly brewed cup.

From the beginning, BJ’s Coffee has set itself apart by roasting its own beans, sourced from growers around the world. When the shop first opened 33 years ago, this hands-on approach was rare. “People are more aware now and are seeking out those small coffee shops where owners personally source their beans from different farmers,” Becky Jo explains.

While the coffee industry has evolved and consumer awareness has grown, BJ’s Coffee has remained true to its roots. Customers still find the same warm, welcoming atmosphere, an impressive selection of locally roasted beans and the expertly crafted lattes, mochas and breves that have made BJ’s a local favorite.

While the classic drinks are flowing steadily, BJ’s top seller is the exclusive Mexican Mocha, made with house-made Mexican chocolate.

BJ’s Coffee Co. remains family-owned as her son, Nathan, who founded To the Roots Coffee Roasters, has taken over the day-to-day operations as Becky Jo scales back her involvement in the shop.

Reflecting on this transition, Becky Jo expresses deep gratitude to the loyal patrons who have supported BJ’s over the decades. “I really appreciate the community support that we have had,” she says. “[We] couldn’t be here for this long without them.” She also acknowledges the importance of her hardworking team, saying, “It’s hard work–a lot of hard work–and long hours.”

While the shop’s classic drinks remain as popular as ever, BJ’s top seller is its signature Mexican Mocha, crafted with house-made Mexican chocolate—a must-try for any coffee lover.

BJ’s Coffee Co. remains a beloved staple, open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and continues to serve exceptional coffee, just as it has for more than three decades.
