BOOKS, BOOTS AND BREWS IN TUALATIN VALLEY

Trip Time: 3 Days

Trade your usual weekend routine for a new adventure in Tualatin Valley. This three-day, pet-free getaway takes you beyond the dog-friendly trails and taprooms to discover local bookstores, craft breweries, forested trails and unexpected attractions. From hunting down your next favorite IPA to challenging your high score at one of the world’s largest pinball museums, it’s a weekend packed with new discoveries.

Day 1

Check into the Hyatt House Beaverton (map it), your basecamp for the weekend. Located in the heart of Beaverton, the Hyatt offers modern comfort and easy access to local transit and is in walking distance of a multitude of shops and dining. Before heading out to explore, download the Tap Season Ale Trail Mobile Passport on your phone to start tracking your brewery stops. Walk over to Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing (map it) for your first afternoon stop. While smaller than the iconic downtown Portland landmark, this location holds a massive inventory with a standout selection of graphic novels, anime and manga. You can easily spend an hour or two browsing the shelves for a new read. Next, explore downtown with a Beaverton craft-brewery crawl:
  • Binary Brewing.co (map it): Start here for a pint and classic pub bites in this playful, tech-themed atmosphere.
  • Loyal Legion (map it): Step inside this local-favorite beer hall with nearly 70 craft beers and wines on tap. Grab a bite from its menu of comfort-food favorites, including smash burgers, bratwursts and chili.
  • Breakside Brewery (map it): Head to the taproom to sip on award-winning Northwest IPAs and creative seasonal brews. Explore the food cart pod featuring different cuisines.
  • Central Station Taps (map it): Cap off the night at this local taphouse, located steps away from your hotel and featuring a rotating selection of local beers and more.

Day Two

Start your morning with a drive out to the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, a designated national recreational trail. This 21-mile hike (one way) features a fully paved path, trestles and bridges, and passes through a portion of L.L. Stub Stewart State Park (map it). After working up an appetite on the trail, head over to Smokehouse Chicken and Guns (map it). Known for its wood-fired chicken, crispy seasoned potatoes and signature sauces, it is the ultimate post-hike fuel. After fueling up, spend your afternoon diving into local gaming culture. Do a little game shopping at Guardian Games (map it), where you can browse an extensive collection of tabletop games, miniatures and collectibles. Or check out one of the world’s largest collections of pinball and arcade games at Next Level Pinball Museum (map it). Play your way through hundreds of classic and modern pinball and arcade machines on a single admission ticket. In the evening, unwind at Westgate Bourbon Bar (map it). Settle in for a dinner at this gastropub and pair your meal with an extensive list of rare whiskeys and craft cocktails.
